Alonissos (Liadromia) is an all green picturesque island of the Northern Sporades which covers an area of 64 km². It is the only inhabited island in the National Marine Park of Alonissos which covers an area of 2,200 km². The rest of the area is covered by the following small islands that surround it: Peristera 16 km², Kyra-Panagia 25 km², Gioura 14 km², Skantzoura 12 km², Piperi 8 km², Psathoura 1 km², Dio Adelphia 3 km².

The highest summit of the island is the mountain Kouvouli with an altitude of 476m with lower mountains consisting of Geladias 456m, Tourkovigla 343m, Kalovoulos 355m and Vouno 255m.

The area inhabited consists of Patitiri, which is the main harbour of Alonissos; adjacent villages are Roussoum, Votsi, Old Alonissos (Chora) and the seaside resorts of Steni Vala and Kalamakia. It is on these settlements that the population of about 3,000 people is mainly spread. There are also many isolated cottages, as well as small picturesque churches. Alonissos is covered with pines, olive trees, almond trees, Holm oaks, mastic trees, arbutus bushes and also fruit bearing trees.

Its clear sea, dreamy coastlines, bays, vegetation, the inhabitants’ traditional hospitality and the calm, cool atmosphere make Alonissos a place where someone can really rest during one’s summer holidays and come back into daily life refreshed and full with new impressions.

Administratively, the island is attached to the province of Skopelos, which is a part of the county of Magnesia, while religiously belonging to the Metropolis of Chalkis.
The island has a sub-directorate of its own, constabulary, custom house, telecommunications office, public electric works office and post office. There is also an elementary school of six grades as well as a junior and senior high school.
