Exploring Alonissos
Exploring Alonissos on foot, by scooter, or by boat will make your holidays even more enjoyable and fill you with wonderful impressions and memories that will keep you company during the dull winter days. You can walk up to the old town of Alonissos, at an altitude of 255 meters, visit the Venetian castle, and enjoy the spectacular view. On a clear day, you can see Mount Athos, Mount Olympus, Pelion, Evia, Skyros, and Skopelos.
The old town of Alonissos was the main village until 1965, when a strong earthquake destroyed most of the houses. It has changed very little over time, and walking through its narrow alleys will take you back in time to the traditional island life of Greece as it once was. It takes about 30–50 minutes to get there. Walking through the pine forest, you will enjoy the natural, unspoiled, and wild landscape rich in flora and fauna. There are also some remains of the Byzantine monastery dedicated to Saints Anargyroi, which are sure to impress you.
You can also explore the nearby uninhabited islands of Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Psathoura, and Skantzoura, as well as take a tour around the main island. Gioura will impress you with the unexplored Cave of the Cyclops, as well as a unique species of wild goat found only on this island, very different from those on Gyaros, Crete, or the Alps. On Psathoura, you can see the ruins of an ancient city now submerged beneath the sea.
There is also a sunken Byzantine cargo ship in the harbor of Agios Petros, where excavations are currently taking place.
