Roads

During the last 15 years great progress in extending and asphalting the roads of the island has been done. There exists about 45km of asphalt roads approaching all beaches and almost every place on the island. A main road passes through the middle of the island connection the Old Village, Patitiri, Votsi and the Northern tip of the island (Gerakas). In the middle of the island (the area named Tsolia Lakka) the main road forks in a southeast direction which connects the areas of Agios Petros, Steni Vala, Glyfa, Kalamakia, Bambakies and Agios Dimitrios. Along these two roads there are turnoffs connecting to most of the beaches. To the north of the island there exists a forest road (without asphalt) in a good enough situation, passing through the areas of Agii Anargiri, Turkoneri, Megali Ammos and leading to the area named Agallou Lakka. The turnoff for this road is found approx. 1 km after the turn to Votsi - towards the left.

Water

The water in Alonissos is safe to drink. It is pumped by ground drills and has a high mineral content and there is also a desalination plant on the island. Bottled water can be bought here in the bar of the hotel if you prefer. Please use water for showers etc sparingly as Alonissos, although quite a lush island does not have abundant supplies.

Electric

For the electric power the island is connected through Skopelos and Skiathos with the main land to the region of Pelion. The electric is 220V. The types of plus used are C and F. Plug C is the plug which has two round pins and plug F is the plug with two round pins and two earth clips on the side.

Climate

The climate of the island is cool and dry in comparison to other regions during the summer, because of the forests, the sea and the local wind named “meltemi”. Meltemi is a cool wind coming from the northeast during the summer. The power of these winds is usually a force 5 but sometimes can reach a force 7 on the Beaufort scale. These winds reach their highest power after 10 in the morning and blow continuously until they weaken around 5 in the afternoon.

Greek sun

The sun in Greece is much hotter and stronger than at home so please be careful initially. Use a high factor sun cream and don’t spend long periods in the sun, taking things easy will ensure an even longer lasting tan without pain and inconvenience of burning. If you do start shivering, feeling dizzy or sick, stay in the shade, drink plenty (not alcohol) water or fruit juices are good and try to eat something salty to replace lost salt and potassium.

Food

The many restaurants, tavernas and ouzeries which can be found in Patitiri, Votsi, Old Alonissos, Steni Vala, and Kalamakia in addition to various beach restaurants provide their service with a large variety of mezedes, food, fresh fish and good Greek wine. Don’t miss tasting the traditional specialties of the island, such as astakomakaronada (pasta with lobster), kakavia (various fish soup with vegetables), tyropitta (traditional fried round cheese pie), boureki (traditional meat pie) etc.

Nightlife

Alonissos is a quiet and serene island which has great respect for the environment. The nightlife centers around the small bars and tavernas on the island. There are tavernas which have live music and the bars in the harbour stay open late in the peak season.

Highlights

During the summer time a lot of highlights and events are organized under the responsibility of the municipality and with the cooperation of other local unions, such as music festivals, theatre, exhibitions of photography or painting etc. The religious festivals of our patron saint (Agia Paraskevi) on 26 of July in the harbor and the Celebration for the Virgin Mary on 15 August in the old village (Panagias) are very exciting.
